‘Harry Potter’ Series Adds ‘Succession’ Alum to Staff in New Update

HBO has announced significant developments for its upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ TV adaptation, revealing Francesca Gardiner as the showrunner and Mark Mylod as the director for multiple episodes. This adaptation aims to bring J.K. Rowling’s beloved novel series to life on the small screen, following its successful journey through multiple film adaptations.

Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on ‘Succession’ and ‘His Dark Materials,’ will helm the as-yet-untitled series, while Mark Mylod, celebrated for his direction on ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘The Menu,’ joins as the director. Both are Emmy winners, adding further prestige to HBO’s ambitious project, which was unveiled by HBO and Warner Bros. TV.

According to a magazine, Gardiner and Mylod will executive produce alongside series author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman from Heyday Films. The official series description promises a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series, introducing a new cast to lead a fresh generation of fans into the magical world.

While the premiere is slated for 2026 on HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery Max streaming service, specific details like casting and writing announcements are yet to be disclosed. Author J.K. Rowling, who has remained a central figure in the franchise, expressed her enthusiasm on X, stating she interviewed Gardiner and Mylod and is thrilled to have them on board as director and writer, respectively.

Rowling’s involvement as an executive producer underscores her commitment to the project, amidst controversy over her stance on transgender issues, which has drawn criticism from ‘Harry Potter’ stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.

Despite this, Warner Bros. Discovery emphasizes that while the original films remain foundational, each season of the television series will introduce ‘Harry Potter’ and his magical adventures to a new global audience.
