Shortly after the Walt Disney Company celebrated its 100th anniversary, ‘Wish’ was released. It honours Disney's illustrious past by making multiple references to its beloved animated films. Though the Audience Score is a much higher 81%, not all reactions to the movie have been favourable. Since its November premiere, the film has received mixed reviews, earning a 48% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ahead of ‘Wish’'s 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD releases, Harvey Guillén speaks exclusively with PEOPLE about the movie's reception and the criticism it has received.

Thinking back on the history of animation and the film industry more broadly, Harvey Guillén observes, "I think it's been a weird time for film in general and for animation." He suggests that the movie's reception might have been affected by increased scrutiny and a need for instant gratification.

Under the direction of Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, ‘Wish’ revolves around Ariana DeBose's character Asha, who grants a wish and joins forces with Star, a cosmic force, to face off against King Magnifico, a formidable villain.

Harvey Guillén highlights the progressive storyline of ‘Wish,’ emphasizing Asha, the film's female lead, and how it deviates from traditional Disney hero clichés. He agrees that although some people might not be prepared for this change, the important thing is to keep going.

‘Wish’ is presently accessible on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K formats in addition to digital platforms.
