Highlights from Billboard's Women in Music Awards

Before her performance at the Billboard Women in Music Awards, Charli XCX shared a vulnerable moment, revealing her heightened emotions as she prepared to take the stage. The Grammy-nominated artist delivered a poignant tribute to her late collaborator Sophie, introducing an unreleased song titled ‘So I’.

This deeply personal track, presumably from her upcoming album ‘Brat’, served as a heartfelt homage to Sophie, whose untimely passing in 2021 left a profound impact on Charli.

As Charli commenced her performance, her voice echoed over a melody reminiscent of Sophie's track ‘It's Okay To Cry’, setting a melancholic yet resonant tone. The lyrics of ‘So I’ revealed Charli's inner turmoil and grief, capturing poignant moments shared with Sophie and expressing regret over missed opportunities to connect: "You would say 'C'mon stay for dinner' / I'd say 'No, I'm fine' (Now I really wish I stayed)."

While the pair had collaborated on several projects, including Charli's ‘Vroom Vroom’, Sophie's work, notably her album ‘Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides’, had garnered widespread acclaim.

Following her heartfelt performance, Charli XCX was honoured with the prestigious Powerhouse of the Year award. In her acceptance speech, she candidly expressed her nerves about performing, highlighting her use of autotune as an integral part of her artistic expression. Despite her vulnerability, Charli's words resonated deeply with the audience, evoking a rare moment of silence amidst the energetic atmosphere of the event.
