How Steven Spielberg’s ‘Note’ Transformed the Ending of ‘Twisters’

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones recently shared a fascinating behind-the-scenes story about their new film, ‘Twisters.’ Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the movie is a sequel to the 1996 hit ‘Twister’ and features Powell as Tyler Owens, a renowned storm chaser and Edgar-Jones as Kate Carter, a dedicated meteorologist.

In an interview with Collider, the actors revealed that legendary director Steven Spielberg had a significant impact on the film’s ending. Originally, the script included a scene where the two main characters shared a kiss, but Spielberg, who executive produced the original ‘Twister,’ suggested cutting it. His reason? To avoid a clichéd conclusion.

“I think it’s a Spielberg note, wasn’t it?” Daisy Edgar-Jones asked her co-star. Powell confirmed, adding that Spielberg’s suggestion helped keep the focus on the core theme of the film. Edgar-Jones elaborated, saying, “There’s something wonderful about the ending now. It feels like a continuation, not the end of their story. The characters are united by their shared passion for storm chasing.”

Glen Powell agreed, emphasising that the movie isn’t about the characters falling in love. “It’s about Kate finding her passion for storm chasing again,” he explained. “So, that’s what you have at the end of the movie. Her sense of home and purpose is reinvigorated.”

Powell also praised Spielberg’s note, calling it a great decision. “A kiss would have been unrepresentative of the film’s true goal,” he said. “It’s amazing how Spielberg can still influence the industry with such insightful feedback.”

‘Twisters’ also stars Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, David Corenswet, and Harry Hadden-Paton, among others. The film is now showing in theatres.
