Iron Maiden's drummer, Nicko McBrain, recently opened up about a challenging chapter in his life. In a candid interview with 'Metal Hammer' magazine, McBrain admitted that he faced the daunting fear of never being able to play the drums again after experiencing a stroke in January.

The drummer encountered a minor stroke that resulted in partial paralysis on his right side, extending from the shoulder down. Determined to overcome this setback, McBrain dedicated ten weeks to intensive therapy to regain full strength. By May, he was back in action, ready to join the band for rehearsals leading up to their 'The Future Past' tour.

Reflecting on the experience, McBrain shared, "It was very, very difficult. When it first happened, I thought, this is it, I'm not going to be able to play. I've got a tour coming up in three months' time. I had a lot of time for reflection in the hospital. My wife was really my bastion of strength and encouragement, and she was with me throughout."

Acknowledging the vital support from his bandmates, particularly Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris, McBrain expressed gratitude for their encouragement. "Throughout all this period of time, I was in touch with Steve. Obviously, all the guys, and I'd have a bit of a chat with them on the phone, and they were all very, very encouraging, and none more so than Steve. He said, 'Look, the most important thing is that you get well and work on getting yourself together.'"

Despite facing health challenges, McBrain decided to share the news with fans in August, emphasizing his focus on delivering stellar performances. "I feel it's important to let you know about this now instead of earlier as I was mainly concerned with doing my job and concentrating on getting back to 100% fitness," he explained. "I'm not there yet, but by the grace of God, I'm getting better and stronger as the weeks go by."

In October, McBrain disclosed that he was almost fully recovered, noting an 85 to 90 per cent restoration of strength. However, he candidly admitted to grappling with some difficulties in the speed and dexterity of his fingers.

This revelation comes after McBrain disclosed his battle with laryngeal cancer in 2020. He urged fans to prioritize their health, advising them to consult a doctor if they notice any unexplained changes in the sound of their voice.
