Is John Mulaney to Host The Oscars for The First Time? Find Out

John Mulaney has recently expressed his readiness to take on more talk show gigs and possibly step into the role of hosting the Oscars. He’s been quite active in the hosting scene, having recently helmed a six-day talk show series on Netflix and emceed the Governor’s Awards of the Academy earlier this year.

Mulaney seems to be keeping his options open, indicating a shift from his previous stance of rigid preferences. “I used to have strong opinions, ‘I’ll only do this’ or ‘I’ll never do that,'” he shared with IndieWire, “But both I and the entire entertainment industry have changed so much.”

While there’s been chatter about his future as a TV presenter, there’s also a clamour online for him to take the helm at the Oscars. His memorable monologue at the Academy’s Governor’s Awards in January certainly didn’t go unnoticed. Reflecting on his recent Netflix venture, ‘Everybody’s In LA,’ Mulaney attributed his decision to instinct and the prevailing zeitgeist.

“It was so fun,” he remarked, clearly enjoying the experience. “I really had fun doing that. I will say: I’m open to whatever.” He expressed a particular fondness for hosting award shows with a more relaxed vibe, like the Spirit Awards or Governor’s Awards, where the pressure is somewhat dialled down. “They’re just a little more relaxed and casual. Going in and trying to have a shitload of fun is a great feeling,” he quipped.

While Mulaney co-hosted the Film Independent Spirit Awards with Nick Kroll in 2017 and 2018, he’s yet to take the reins at the Oscars.
