J.K. Rowling Will Not Face Further Action From Police After Social Media Comments

J.K. Rowling has been cleared of any potential prosecution by the police, following her comments regarding new hate crime laws online.

The author recently voiced her opposition to the new legislation, which was implemented in Scotland on 1st April. The laws now make it a criminal offence to “stir up hatred” based on various characteristics, including age, disability, religion, s*xual orientation, transgender identity or being inters*x.

Rowling expressed her concerns about the legislation in a series of posts on X/Twitter, challenging the authorities to arrest her upon her return to Scotland.

In response to Rowling’s comments, police have confirmed that her remarks do not violate any criminal laws. Rowling welcomed this decision, stating on X/Twitter, “I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement.”

Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousef, has addressed the concerns raised about the bill, particularly by gender-critical groups. He emphasized the protection of free speech under the new legislation, with specific clauses ensuring compatibility with human rights laws.

This development comes after Rowling was previously reported to the police last month for alleged transphobic remarks. The incident involved comments made about broadcaster India Willoughby, which were deemed a non-crime hate incident.
