James Cameron Says He Wouldn’t Create a Movie Like ‘The Terminator’ Today

James Cameron has had a lasting impact on Hollywood’s sci-fi action genre. He is best known for directing the two Terminator films, ‘The Terminator’ (1984) and ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ (1991). One of the longest-running and most enduring film franchises is the Terminator series, which stars Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield, Michael Biehn and Arnold Schwarzenegger among its ensemble cast.

Cameron recently voiced his reluctance to return to films similar to ‘The Terminator,’ citing his increased knowledge of firearms. As he was putting the 1984 movie together, he acknowledged how easy it was to obtain a gun in America despite his ignorance of the subject. Even though guns play a major part in the Terminator films, James Cameron made it clear that he is reluctant to glorify them, especially in light of the current social issues surrounding gun violence.

Thinking back on his earlier work, Cameron acknowledged that he was hesitant to tackle subjects that had previously revolved around the fetishization of guns in light of the current state of affairs surrounding guns. Notably, ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines’, ‘Terminator Salvation’, ‘Terminator Genisys’, and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ were the first four films in the franchise’s expansion.

In the meantime, Cameron hinted at a 2022 Terminator reboot script, though specifics are still unknown. Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger, two actors, have made it clear that they would not be eager to return to their iconic roles in upcoming franchise entries.

Regarding Cameron’s filmography, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, his most recent release, has captured the attention of viewers; Avatar 3 is scheduled for a 2025 theatrical release. The Avatar series, with a cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and others, remains the height of epic sci-fi storytelling.
