James Gunn’s Favourite DCU Project Still Under Wraps

James Gunn revealed his favourite DCU project hasn’t been announced yet, calling it his “favourite thing.” Kept secret to avoid copycats, the project joins several unannounced films in development as the DCU kicks off with 'Superman' on 11th July.

As the DC Universe prepares to enter its 'Gods and Monsters' chapter, James Gunn has hinted that his most beloved project within the rebooted franchise hasn’t been unveiled yet.

While promoting upcoming releases—including the new film 'Superman', the second season of 'Peacemaker', and the series 'Lanterns'—Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that his personal favourite project is one that hasn’t been publicly announced. He expressed hope that it would begin production soon, referring to it as “just my favourite thing” among all the projects currently in development.

The DC Studios co-chairman mentioned that several films are in the writing phase—one in strong shape and another still in early development—but said it wasn’t fully decided which would follow the upcoming 'Clayface' project. Gunn revealed he is also working on a new script himself, which, like the mystery project, remains under wraps.

He explained that although several titles were revealed during the January 2023 announcement, one major idea he had pitched to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav was intentionally kept secret to prevent other studios from copying it. Gunn said this was because the concept felt particularly vulnerable to imitation by other studios, prompting them to keep it under tight wraps.

Gunn Hints at Secret Projects as DCU Takes Flight

According to Gunn, much of what is currently in development remains unknown to the public: “One of the scripts people kind of know about, my script people don’t know about. The other script people don’t know about. So it’s mostly stuff people don’t know about.”

With 'Superman' set to hit cinemas on 11 July, Gunn’s vision for a new DCU is about to take flight—but it seems the most personal chapter of that vision is still waiting in the wings.
