James Van Der Beek, the beloved actor best known for his iconic role as Dawson Leery on 'Dawson's Creek,' has tragically passed away at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with colorectal cancer. Van Der Beek gained critical praise and a loyal following after becoming a young heartthrob and a generational icon in the late 1990s. From 'Varsity Blues' to 'CSI: Cyber,' he demonstrated his flexibility in movies and television over the years, captivating viewers with his genuineness, humour, and willingness to share his personal story.

James David Van Der Beek rose to fame in the late 1990s as the sensitive, introspective Dawson Leery on the hit teen drama 'Dawson's Creek,' which aired from 1998 to 2003 and became a defining show of its era. He became well-known and a teenage idol thanks to the part, which also helped establish a career that included stage, film, and television.

Beyond 'Dawson's Creek,' he starred in films including 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' and 'The Rules of Attraction,' as well as the 1999 football drama 'Varsity Blues,' which topped box office charts and brought him widespread acclaim.

Van Der Beek's television work was as varied as it was prolific. He appeared in series including 'CSI: Cyber,' 'Pose,' 'How I Met Your Mother,' 'Ugly Betty,' and even embraced self‑parody on 'Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.' He also showcased his personality on reality shows such as 'Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer,' the latter in 2025, where he performed under the "Griffin" costume and had his wife and children surprise him onstage.

Battle With Cancer and Final Days

After a regular colonoscopy in August 2023, Van Der Beek was told he had stage 3 colorectal cancer. He first kept the news to himself until late 2024, when he made it public to promote screening and early detection. His wife, Kimberly, and their six children—Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah—provided him with courage and optimism during his sickness. On 11th February, 2026, his family broke the devastating news that he had died quietly after a protracted battle with "courage, faith, and grace."

Van Der Beek's health issues were evident in the months leading up to his passing; he was unable to attend a 'Dawson's Creek' reunion event in 2025 due to illness, though he sent a video message for fans and loved ones at the charity live reading. He paid heartfelt tribute to his father and daughter on their shared birthday in his most recent public Instagram post, a message filled with gratitude, love, and reflection on life.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from co‑stars, collaborators, and fans worldwide, reflecting the talent, and kindness that defined both his life and career.
