Janet recalled the creation of ‘Scream’, revealing that she and Michael wrote the song in his New York apartment. She noted that every time she sings the track, she is reminded of what Michael was going through at the time, including his struggles with fame and public scrutiny. Janet's role as his supportive little sister remains a poignant part of her memories, highlighting the deep bond they shared.

Released in 1995, ‘Scream’ was a significant release for both Janet and Michael. The song addressed issues such as fame-related challenges and personal conflicts, with lyrics expressing frustration over injustice and falsehoods. It achieved notable success, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning multiple accolades, including a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form, and a record 11 MTV Video Music Award nominations.

In a 1995 MTV interview, Michael expressed his honour and pride in the song’s success, acknowledging the hard work both he and Janet put into the project. However, Janet revealed that despite the song’s public success, the behind-the-scenes experience was challenging. She described how Michael’s record company attempted to create a competitive atmosphere by blocking her access to the set, which deeply hurt her as she felt she was fighting alongside him rather than against him.

Janet’s reflection on the ‘Scream’ music video’s production highlights the difficulties they faced, despite the apparent fun and success of the project. She admitted to feeling a sense of loss as the collaborative spirit of their earlier days was overshadowed by the competitive dynamics imposed by external pressures. Janet’s heartfelt performance of ‘Scream’ continues to serve as a tribute to her brother, underscoring the enduring impact of their musical partnership.
