‘Jaws’ Child Actor Jay Mello Reveals He Avoided the Ocean for Years After Filming Iconic Shark Scene

Jay Mello was just six years old when he stepped into cinematic history as Sean Brody, the youngest son of police chief Martin Brody in Steven Spielberg’s 'Jaws'. Decades later, Mello still vividly remembers the chilling moments behind the scenes—especially his first encounter with the film’s terrifying animatronic shark.

Cast in the 1975 thriller movie after accompanying his older brothers to an open audition, Mello's natural curiosity and mimicking behaviour caught Spielberg’s eye. While his brothers auditioned, young Jay Mello mirrored the director’s movements so closely that Spielberg asked him to stay behind. That chance moment turned into a memorable role in one of Hollywood’s most iconic blockbusters.

What's Jay Mello's Horror Story?

Filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, near Mello’s hometown, 'Jaws' introduced him to the massive mechanical sharks that would come to haunt his childhood. He distinctly remembers seeing just the head of one of the animatronic sharks for the first time and questioning where the rest of the creature was. The life-like design, masterminded by production designer Joe Alves, was so convincing that it kept Jay Mello from setting foot in the ocean for nearly two years after filming wrapped.

Alves designed three versions of the shark—each built for specific movement directions—and made sure its look matched that of a Great White, only twice as large for greater cinematic impact. Though Alves viewed the sharks as props, Mello's young imagination painted a different picture. When he finally saw himself on screen, the fear became real. His parents even had to shield his eyes during some of the film’s most terrifying scenes.

One moment in particular stuck with him: the infamous boat scene revealing a decapitated fisherman. Mello didn’t actually see that part until years later, but it left a lasting impression once he did.

Following his role in 'Jaws', Jay Mello chose to leave the spotlight behind and embrace a more down-to-earth childhood away from Hollywood. The later 'Jaws' sequels were filmed far from his Massachusetts home, and his role as Sean Brody was eventually passed to other actors. The character would go on to meet a grim end in 1987’s 'Jaws: The Revenge'.

Though he moved on from Hollywood, Jay Mello’s early role in 'Jaws' remains a legendary part of movie history—and a reminder that even behind the scenes, Spielberg’s shark was every bit as terrifying as it looked on screen.
