'The Resurrection of the Christ,' the eagerly anticipated follow-up to 'The Passion of the Christ,' was supposed to return Jim Caviezel to the part that shaped a large portion of his public image after almost twenty years. However, recent rumors indicate that Caviezel will not play Jesus again. In addition to changing the lead, the filmmakers are contemplating how the resurrection and its spiritual depths will be depicted as the picture moves into pre-production and casting calls start in Rome. Two installments of the sequel are planned for release: Part One on Good Friday, 26th March, 2027, and Part Two on Ascension Day, 6th May, 2027.

Why Caviezel Is Out & What the Film Will Cover?
It seems that a combination of scheduling, technical, and artistic issues led to Caviezel's departure. Recasting decisions were influenced, according to sources, by the difficulties of de-aging, digital effects, and working with older actors. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Caviezel is no longer attached, despite having stated in past interviews that he would be open to going back. Monica Bellucci, who portrayed Mary Magdalene in the 2004 movie, will also not be making a comeback.
The new movie will continue the exploration of Jesus' resurrection and the spiritual landscape between his crucifixion and ascension, which was the focus of 'The Passion of the Christ' (2004). The sequel, according to Mel Gibson and authors (including Randall Wallace), is more comprehensive, exploring topics including the fall of angels, the Harrowing of Hell, and the apostles' fate following resurrection.

Production Plans, New Casting & Release Timeline
Rome is already in the midst of casting after Caviezel stepped down. The film is now in pre-production, and it is anticipated that it will be filmed in 2026 in the Cinecittà Studios in Rome, Matera, Ginosa, Gravina, Laterza, and Altamura.
The two sections of the sequel will be released precisely forty days apart, one on 26th March, 2027 (Good Friday), and the other on, 6th May, 2027 (Ascension Day). Despite criticism and lackluster support, the original 'The Passion of the Christ' was a huge hit, grossing over $600 million worldwide. It is still of the most lucrative religious films ever produced.

In addition to carrying on the story, the sequel aims to delve deeper into theological and spiritual themes. It remains to be seen if the new Jesus and new vision will be accepted, but the change signals a daring new era in Mel Gibson's biblical narrative.
