Jimmy Kimmel, who has served as host for the Academy Awards on four occasions, including the most recent ceremony, has confirmed that he will not return as the emcee for the 2025 Oscars. His decision to step back from the role marks a significant change for the prestigious event, which has seen Kimmel bring his signature humour and style to the stage in previous years.
John Mulaney, a well-known comedian who hosted the Academy's 14th Governors Awards earlier this year, was also considered for the hosting role. However, he chose to decline the opportunity. Mulaney's appearance at the 2024 Oscars as a presenter left a lasting impression, particularly with a memorable bit about Kevin Costner and ‘Field of Dreams’, which was well-received by the audience.

Kevin Costner, who was notably touched by Mulaney's performance, praised the comedian’s contribution to the event. Costner remarked, “I couldn't believe that guy. Amazing. I watched it a second time... What a chance, because there are always people at the Oscars trying to rush you. And he went fast. But what he said, I was very touched by it. I should talk to him because I was really impressed. He was a genius.” This endorsement highlights the positive reception Mulaney received for his onstage presence.
Kimmel, who first hosted the Oscars in 2017 and 2018, saw the ceremony go hostless from 2019 to 2021. In 2022, Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes, and Amy Schumer took on the hosting duties. Kimmel returned for the 2023 ceremony and again for 2024, achieving the highest ratings for the telecast in four years, with 19.5 million viewers tuning in. His successful return underscores his impact on the show’s popularity.

In addition to his role as Oscars host, Kimmel is also the host of the ABC game show ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’. His work on the Oscars has been a collaborative effort with his wife, Molly McNearney, who is the co-executive producer of the show. Their partnership has been instrumental in executing the high-profile event.
Reflecting on his preparations for the recent Oscars ceremony, Kimmel previously shared, “The big challenge always is trying to keep the show moving, so it's a matter of picking your spots and popping in when you're needed and staying out of the picture when you're not.” This approach highlights his strategic planning and adaptability in maintaining the pace and flow of the show.
