Jo Koy Disses Prince Harry and Megan Markle at The 2024 Golden Globes

In his hosting debut at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, funnyman Jo Koy brought the house down with a cheeky joke that had Hollywood’s elite in stitches. Taking on the hosting gig just a fortnight before the event, the Filipino-American comedy sensation effortlessly steered through the ceremony, toasting the triumphs of stars like Lily Gladstone, Cillian Murphy and the ‘Succession’ crew.

Koy’s comedic finesse injected a lively and entertaining vibe into the proceedings, proving his knack for connecting with Tinseltown’s finest while keeping things breezy and unforgettable.

During his Golden Globes premiere, Jo Koy regaled the A-listers with a saucy jab aimed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. With the hosting reins thrust upon him a mere two weeks prior, Koy kicked off his opening monologue with playful teasing of celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper and Barry Keoghan, before turning his comedic crosshairs on the royal couple.

Koy quipped, “Harry and Meghan Markle got paid millions for doing absolutely nothing – and that’s just by Netflix.” Laughter erupted, and the camera cheekily panned to Netflix’s top honcho, Ted Sarandos. Notably, the royal duo was absent from the awards bash. The jest took a dig at the Netflix documentary, ‘Harry & Meghan,’ released in December 2022, where the couple spilled the beans on their decision to step back from royal duties.

Viewers labelled Koy’s jest as “brutal,” adding to what many consider a trying year for the ex-royals. In the aftermath of a challenging 2023, Prince Harry delivered a joke in a public appearance that viewers deemed “brutal.”

Harry and Megan’s Tumultuous 2023

The year posed various professional and personal challenges for the couple. Despite the success of Harry’s memoir, ‘Spare,’ their other ventures hit roadblocks. Their Spotify podcast, ‘Archetypes,’ created under an £18 million deal in 2020, was axed within a year. Bill Simmons, the streaming platform’s podcast guru, later criticized the couple as “grifters.”

Their charity, Archewell, founded in 2020 and named after their son Archie, faced a significant drop in donations. The annual report and promotional film showcasing their charitable endeavours were overshadowed by an £8.7 million plummet in donations from 2021 to 2022.

The US income tax return revealed a decrease from £10.3 million in 2021 to just over £1.6 million in 2022. Despite their efforts to highlight positive contributions, the charity encountered financial hurdles.

At the Golden Globes, the film ‘Oppenheimer’ and the TV shows ‘Succession’ and ‘The Bear’ took home top honours. However, Koy’s jest aimed at Taylor Swift ruffled the singer’s feathers. Additionally, Jim Gaffigan’s controversial quip about unsealed Jeffrey Epstein court records had the audience cringing.

The Golden Globes spotlighted outstanding achievements in both film and television, with moments that sparked mixed reactions among attendees and viewers.
