Jo Koy on Golden Globes Criticism: “I’d be Lying if [I said] It Doesn’t Hurt”

Comedian Jo Koy didn’t escape the heat after his stint as the host of the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Just a day after the event, he popped up on ‘Good Morning America (GMA)’ to spill the beans about the gig, revealing that he snagged the hosting role less than two weeks before the big night.

When quizzed about the criticism swirling around him, Koy didn’t sugarcoat it. “I’d be lying if [I said] it doesn’t hurt. I hit a little moment there [during the monologue] where I was just like, ‘Ah. Hosting is a tough gig,'” he confessed.

Despite being a seasoned stand-up comic, Koy admitted that hosting is a different beast altogether. “It’s a tough room,” he told ‘GMA’ co-hosts Eva Pilgrim and DeMarco Morgan during a video call. “It was a hard job. I’m not gonna lie. Getting that gig and then having the amount of time that we had to prepare, that was a crash course. I feel bad, but I still gotta say that I love what I did.”

Addressing the infamous Taylor Swift joke about her frequent appearances at NFL games, Koy clarified his intention: “It was a weird joke, I guess, but it was more on the NFL. I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways, and how the [Golden] Globes didn’t have to do that… So it was more of a jab towards the NFL, but it just didn’t come out that way.”

As the conversation unfolded, Jo Koy acknowledged feeling “deflated” after the hosting gig, agreeing with Eva Pilgrim’s observation. “Yeah, I wanted to give a little bit more of me, and I fell a little short.” The Taylor Swift jab wasn’t the only misfire of the night; viewers took to social media to dub Jo Koy’s monologue “a disaster.”

From joking about being attracted to a plastic doll to the key moment in Barbie’s life involving bad breath and cellulite, Koy’s humour left some groaning instead of laughing. Tough crowd, tough night.
