Renowned Hairspray director John Waters is gearing up to start filming his first movie in two decades, according to recent reports. As reported by World of Reel, Aubrey Plaza is set to headline 'Liarmouth,' an adaptation of Waters’ 2022 book of the same title.

The book, dubbed by publishers as a "hilariously filthy tale of sex, crime and family dysfunction," carries the subtitle, 'A Feel-Bad Romance.' 'Liarmouth' delves into the life of Marsha Sprinkle, a compulsive liar and scammer who part ways with her partner Daryl and ends up swindling both her daughter and her mother.

Initially announced in 2022 through Deadline, the project faced delays due to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes.

Waters’ last directorial venture was 'A Dirty Shame' in 2004, featuring Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville and Selma Blair. Known for cult classics like Pink Flamingos and Polyester, Waters later gained widespread recognition with films such as 'Hairspray,' 'Cry-Baby' and 'Serial Mom.'

In 2023, Waters hailed Ari Aster’s dark comedy 'Beau Is Afraid' as the best film of the year. He shared his annual list of favourite movies with Vulture, ranking the A24 film at the top spot.

Describing it as “a superlong, super-crazy, super-funny movie about one man’s mental breakdown,” Waters praised the star-studded cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Patti LuPone, Parker Posey, Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan. He dubbed it a “laugh riot from hell” that audiences won’t soon forget.
