In the psychological thriller ‘Trap’, Josh Hartnett plays a father with a dark secret who is trapped at a concert with his teenage daughter. Reflecting on his role, Hartnett shared how it deepened his understanding of serial killers.
"In preparation for this role, I learned a lot about psychopathy and serial killers, especially how many are willing to speak to reporters about their crimes and motives," Hartnett told ComicBook before the film's premiere. "It's fascinating because they seek recognition and want to be known. What’s striking is that they often come across as incredibly charming in person."

He continued, "You might doubt they could commit such terrible acts because they spend their lives convincing others they aren't monsters. Yet, despite their efforts, they never escape their true nature, even while in prison. They aim to make others feel at ease to manipulate them more effectively. This insight was crucial for portraying my character, who needed to appear charming and convincing to the audience."
Hartnett's preparation for the role impressed director M. Night Shyamalan even before filming began. Shyamalan revealed that Hartnett's visit to Ireland, where Shyamalan was working on ‘The Watchers’, played a key role in his casting decision. "Josh came to see me, and we connected over our shared experiences as fathers of three daughters," Shyamalan said. "That conversation made it clear he was the right fit for the role."

Shyamalan, who is inspired by his close relationship with his daughters—Saleka, Shivani, and Ishana—credited this bond as influencing the film's theme. "The father-daughter dynamic is central to my life," Shyamalan explained. "My fears and desires to protect and make my daughters proud are reflected in ‘Trap’."
