Kanye West Says Alcohol Made Him Make Antisemitic Comments
Kanye West recently opened up about his antisemitic comments from October 2022, which caused a significant uproar. In a newly released episode of right-wing commentator Candace Owens’ podcast, the rapper, who now goes by Ye, shared his thoughts on the incident and the events leading up to it.
Reflecting on his infamous DEFCON tweet, Ye admitted, “I was drinking when I put up the DEFCON tweet. You wanna know what alcohol I had inside me? Hennessy. It turns us grey. The demons [come out].” The podcast episode, originally filmed in 2022, had several surprising revelations and only now made its way to the public. The backlash from his antisemitic remarks was immediate and severe, resulting in lost brand deals, a suspension from Twitter (now known as X), and widespread condemnation.

Owens questioned Ye on why he hadn’t disclosed his intoxicated state earlier, to which he responded that he didn’t want his words to be “discredited.” He maintained that, despite his state, the comments still reflected his “truth.” This echoes the defences Ye used after the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to declare that BeyoncĂ© deserved the award for Best Music Video instead. This incident ignited a feud between Swift, Ye, and his then-wife, Kim Kardashian.
Reflecting on that moment during the 2015 VMAs, Ye quipped, “If I had to do it all over again, what would I have done? Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank half a bottle of Hennessy and given the rest of it to the audience?”
