The highly anticipated ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ is set to officially hit theatres on 30th May, but early reviews from its red carpet premiere suggest the film is facing a rocky start. Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the latest instalment in the iconic martial arts franchise has received a 55% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, signalling a divided reception and one of the lowest ratings in ‘Karate Kid’ history, though not the lowest.

Despite the lukewarm reviews, there’s still optimism that audiences may connect with the film’s nostalgic elements and dynamic action. In ‘Karate Kid: Legends,’ Ben Wang plays the lead role of Li Fong, the new Karate Kid, giving the series new life. Critics have praised Wang’s performance, highlighting his strong screen presence and the film’s well-choreographed martial arts sequences.

Fans of Jackie Chan, who reprises his role as Mr. Han, will be pleased with the amount of action and screen time dedicated to the legendary actor. However, reactions are more reserved when it comes to Ralph Macchio, the original ‘Karate Kid’. His character’s late reappearance and the shift in pacing that follows have left some critics underwhelmed.

Although ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ is being compared to the ‘Cobra Kai’ series, director Jonathan Entwistle has made it clear that the movie is not a sequel to the over-the-top smash. Instead, it serves as a standalone chapter within the broader ‘Karate Kid’ universe. Rather than revisiting the same storylines, it introduces new characters and plotlines while still paying tribute to the franchise’s legacy.

Entwistle sees the movie as an evolution, just as ‘Cobra Kai’ expanded the original films, ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ aims to push the narrative further, offering a fresh take for both longtime fans and newcomers.

While the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score reflects a split among critics, history shows that audience reception can differ. With nostalgic appeal, martial arts action, and beloved franchise veterans, ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ could still find its footing at the box office.
