Kate Winslet Reveals The Truth About Kissing Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘Titanic’: ‘It Was a Mess’

It might be time to move on from your crush on ‘Titanic”s Jack Dawson. Kate Winslet has revealed that kissing Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t as dreamy as it appeared on screen.

Reflecting on the iconic “I’m Flying” scene with Vanity Fair, Winslet acknowledged Leonardo DiCaprio’s charm but confessed that their kissing scenes were far from perfect. She jokingly remarked, “My god, he’s quite the romancer, isn’t he? No wonder every young girl in the world wanted to be kissed by Leonardo DiCaprio.” However, she clarified, “It was not all it’s cracked up to be.”

Winslet explained that the constant makeup touch-ups turned the romantic scenes into a mess. After each take, she ended up with his tan makeup smudged all over her pale makeup, making it look like she’d been eating caramel chocolate. Meanwhile, DiCaprio’s face looked patchy due to the residue from her cosmetics. “Oh God, it was such a mess,” she recalled.

The filming process was further complicated by multiple retakes needed to capture the perfect light and changing sunsets. Winslet also mentioned the physical challenges, such as banging her knee on the railing several times and the inaccessibility of the makeup team due to the set’s location.

Despite the chaotic experience, Winslet and DiCaprio found humour in the situation, often laughing and ending up covered in each other’s makeup. She noted that DiCaprio had to use sunbeds and fake tan makeup, which added to the difficulty.

However, the enduring fame of the movie means Winslet is frequently asked to reenact the “I’m flying” scene whenever she boards a boat. “It does my head in,” she said, admitting she sometimes agrees to the request and other times declines.
