Kelly Rowland is set to unveil a bold new side as she takes on her first role in an erotic thriller, ‘Mea Culpa.'
In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE at the New York City premiere, the 43-year-old ‘Motivation’ singer shared her apprehensions about the role. Reflecting on her initial nervousness upon reading the script, Rowland admitted feeling intimidated by the challenges an erotic thriller presents.
However, a pep talk from a friend turned the tide, convincing her that embracing the fear was the essence of taking on such a project.

With determination fueled by the supportive words, Rowland eagerly embraced the role, crediting Tyler Perry and co-star Trevante Rhodes for their instrumental roles in the process. The premiere, attended by Rowland's former Destiny's Child bandmate Michelle Williams, marked a joyous moment for the friends.
The thriller, written, produced and directed by Tyler Perry, features Rowland in the lead role as criminal defence attorney Mea Harper. The storyline revolves around Mea taking on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Rhodes). As the plot unfolds, Rowland's character grapples with the complexities of determining innocence or guilt, delving into the idea that everyone harbours hidden guilt.

Rowland expressed her excitement about being cast as the leading lady, acknowledging the weight of the responsibility and deeming it an "awesome experience." Eager for more such opportunities, she highlighted her desire to take on additional challenging roles.
While Rowland has previously ventured into thrillers like 2003’s ‘Freddy vs. Jason,’ her role in ‘Mea Culpa’ marks a significant departure from her past acting endeavours. In 2021, she starred in Lifetime’s "Merry Liddle Christmas Baby," showcasing her versatility in roles.
‘Mea Culpa’ is set to premiere on Netflix on 23red February.
