Kendall Jenner Wore The Perfect Archive Look at The Met Gala 2024

Kendall Jenner has cemented her status as an impressive vintage aficionado, boasting a wardrobe filled with impeccably preserved pieces from the likes of Alaïa and Mugler. However, the 2024 Met Gala promises to showcase her most remarkable archive selection to date.

Speaking to Vogue, Jenner revealed her dream of donning an Alexander McQueen creation, delving into the designer’s Givenchy archive to curate her perfect Met Gala ensemble. Dani Michelle, Jenner’s stylist, explains, “The House of Givenchy is currently undergoing a unique transition in creative direction, and they’ve graciously opened their privately safeguarded archives for Kendall at the Met.” After extensive research, Jenner and Michelle settled on a dress from McQueen’s fall 1999 haute couture collection for Givenchy, a piece never before worn and preserved in the brand’s archives.

Tonight, Jenner will make history as the first person to wear this particular McQueen creation, originally conceived but never showcased on the runway. Jenner expresses her gratitude, stating, “It’s been slumbering for the last 25 years. It’s truly a ‘sleeping beauty.’ It’s such a special moment. I feel extremely honoured that they’re allowing me to wear it.”

Given the dress’s pristine condition, alterations were out of the question. Jenner remarks, “So the big moment of truth was, Does it fit me? and it literally fits me like a glove. The rest is history, and it really feels meant to be in a way.” Crafted from nude and black tulle adorned with over 100,000 hand-embroidered black and brass beads and sequins, the dress is not only a testament to meticulous craftsmanship but also a striking piece of artistry with its waist cutouts and regal, sculptural collar and shoulders.

Jenner’s choice of vintage attire is especially fitting for the gala’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties,” which explores our relationship with unwearable clothing. Embracing the theme, Jenner saw an opportunity to indulge her passion for vintage while selecting garments that resonated with her. “The theme, to me, screamed archival,” she remarks, interpreting it as “beauty that’s been slept on.”

This marks Jenner’s 10th Met Gala appearance, but her first showcasing an archival look. She accessorises the ensemble with custom Studio Amelia shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery. Over the past decade, Jenner has delivered numerous memorable Met Gala moments, from her daring La Perla naked dress in 2017 to her showgirl-inspired attire alongside her sister Kylie in 2019.
