Kevin Costner is reflecting on his career and what lies ahead following his widely discussed exit from 'Yellowstone.' The Oscar and Emmy-winning actor, now 70, explained in a recent interview with Radio Times that his choices moving forward will be guided by projects that feel personally meaningful. He noted that while Westerns have defined much of his career, his next chapter does not necessarily need to be tied to the genre.

Costner emphasised that he is open to any role or project that excites him. For him, storytelling is timeless—whether through short stories, novels, or films—and the true test is whether audiences can connect with it across generations. He compared enduring creative works to books that are passed down through families, highlighting the importance of creating art that resonates and lives on.

Projects Kevin Costner is Engaged in

The actor left 'Yellowstone' in 2024, with his iconic character John Dutton written out in the second half of season 5. Since then, Costner has turned his focus toward 'Horizon: An American Saga,' his ambitious multi-part Western epic, as well as his docuseries Kevin Costner's 'The West.' The second chapter of 'Horizon' premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, while 'The West,' which aired on the History Channel, explores the real history behind the legends of America's frontier.

Costner explained that the docuseries serves as a factual counterpart to the stories told in his Western films like 'Dances with Wolves,' and 'Open Range.' He stressed that while the characters may be fictional, the struggles, conflicts, and cultural interactions portrayed in those films mirror countless real experiences of the past. In his view, this gives his Western storytelling an honesty and authenticity that the documentary further supports.

Despite his deep ties to the Western genre, Kevin Costner said he has no plans to limit himself. He hopes to remain creatively relevant, producing work that reflects his own perspective while also resonating with audiences. He added that he doesn't think in terms of retirement, but rather in terms of moving on to whatever project captures his imagination next.

As one of Hollywood's most enduring figures, Kevin Costner continues to balance his legacy as a defining voice of the Western with a clear openness to exploring new genres and creative horizons.
