Kevin Costner Open to Returning to ‘Yellowstone’ Under ‘Right Circumstances’
John Dutton’s future in ‘Yellowstone’ has been a hot topic, but Kevin Costner doesn’t have a definitive answer.
During an appearance on the ‘Today’ show, the 69-year-old actor discussed his controversial departure from ‘Yellowstone’, explaining that the decision was primarily logistical. Costner told Savannah Guthrie, “I did it for five years, and I want to work more than once a year. We lost an entire year at one point, and I thought, ‘That can’t happen again.'”
He mentioned that there was a possibility of working on both ‘Yellowstone’ and his four-part Western epic, ‘Horizon: An American Saga’, but the timing didn’t align.

Costner emphasized his love for the show and its creator, Taylor Sheridan, despite reported creative differences. “I’ve supported and loved Yellowstone. It’s been really important to me, and I would love to return under the right circumstances. We all want that,” he said, adding that it “needs to be the right circumstances.”
Contrary to reports, Costner insisted that he made ‘Yellowstone’ his “first priority.” The delays in receiving scripts for the second half of season five led to scheduling conflicts and his eventual departure. He expressed frustration over the narrative suggesting behind-the-scenes tension. “I’ve taken a beating from those f—ing guys and I know where it’s coming from. I chose not to engage. I made ‘Yellowstone’ my first priority, and implying otherwise is wrong.”
Despite the challenges, Costner remains open to returning to the Dutton ranch. In April, he told Entertainment Tonight that he’d like to come back but hasn’t been able to so far. “Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel comfortable with it, I’d love to do it.”
Production for the final part of Yellowstone’s fifth season began in May in Montana, with the remaining episodes set to air in November after delays caused by the writers’ strike. The upcoming episodes will explore the Dutton family’s struggles amidst shifting alliances, unsolved murders, and conflicts with neighbouring entities.
