Key Lessons Disney Should Take Away from ‘Wish’

‘Wish’ contributes to Disney’s rich history by exploring a theme inherent in many of its beloved classics. The film echoes Disney’s successful formula, featuring a strong-willed female lead, a charming animal sidekick, and a formidable villain. However, despite its homage to Disney’s legacy, ‘Wish’ fell short at the box office, raising questions about its shortcomings. The film’s lacklustre performance highlights the importance of music in Disney’s success.

Over the past century, Disney has seen its fair share of flops, but its triumphs have been overwhelming, largely due to its memorable songs. From timeless classics like ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ to recent hits like ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno,’ Disney’s music plays a pivotal role in captivating audiences of all ages. Unlike its predecessors, ‘Wish’ failed to deliver memorable tunes that resonate with viewers beyond the theatre.

Disney’s best songs not only entertain but also drive the story forward, offering insights into the characters’ desires and motivations. However, ‘Wish’ struggled to integrate its songs seamlessly into the narrative, resulting in disjointed musical moments that felt forced. While the cast, including Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose and musical talent Chris Pine, delivered commendable performances, the music failed to leave a lasting impression.

Unlike previous Disney films that embraced a timeless musical theatre style, ‘Wish’ opted for a more modern sound, reminiscent of recent successes like ‘Moana’ and ‘Encanto.’ However, the attempt to replicate these hits fell short, lacking the lyrical precision and cleverness of renowned composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s work.

The film’s reliance on familiar tropes and references to classic Disney movies only served to highlight its shortcomings.

Ultimately, ‘Wish’ missed the mark by attempting to emulate past successes without offering anything truly original. Disney must learn from this experience and prioritize the quality of its music to recapture the magic that has defined its timeless classics.
