‘Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Confirms Return of Familiar Character With a New Face

‘House of the Dragon’ season 2 wrapped up on a sombre note last Sunday, 4th August, leaving fans eagerly awaiting the next instalment. However, while there’s a long wait ahead, there’s excitement on the horizon with a brand new spin-off, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ set to grace our screens.

This upcoming series set 90 years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ follows the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall, or Dunk, a former squire who rises to the rank of knight. Alongside him is his new squire, Egg, who has intriguing ties to House Targaryen. Although the timelines of ‘House of the Dragon’ and the new spin-off are more than a century apart, a familiar name has sparked curiosity among fans.

The cast announcement revealed Edward Ashley as Ser Steffon Fossoway, Youssef Kerkour as Steely Pate, Shaun Thomas as Raymun Fossoway, Daniel Monks as Ser Manfred Dondarrion, Danny Webb as Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor as Plummer, and Henry Ashton as Daeron Targaryen. Those who followed the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’ will recognise the name Daeron Targaryen, a key figure in the Dance of the Dragons.

However, it’s important to note that there’s no mix-up with the names. The Targaryen household is known for repeating names across generations, leading to some confusion. The Daeron Targaryen in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is a completely different character from the one in ‘House of the Dragon,’ with no direct connection apart from the shared name. The actor set to portray Daeron in ‘House of the Dragon’ season 3 has yet to be announced.

‘Dunk and Egg’ promises to be a fascinating journey, with Peter Claffey portraying Dunk, a character who inherits the position of a hedge knight after his master’s death. Dexter Sol Ansell will play Egg, the young squire, in a six-episode series executive-produced by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, under the guidance of ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunner Ryan Condal.

Condal has hinted that the spin-off will focus on the struggles of the small folk, particularly during times of war. He shared with Entertainment Weekly that “’Dunk and Egg’ is about the small folk who suffer at the hands of the game of thrones as it’s played by the nobles.”

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is set to premiere on 15th June 2025.
