On 20th December, 2025, legendary singer and actress Cher made a stunning comeback to Saturday Night Live, over 40 years after her last full musical guest performance in 1987. The pop star brought her trademark flair and enthusiasm to the Studio 8H stage as fans anxiously watched her perform her holiday songs, such as 'DJ Play a Christmas Song' and 'Run Run Rudolph.'

Cher's return to the famed show delighted audiences, but her performance ignited a heated controversy on social media about whether the 79-year-old artist was lip-synching using pre-recorded vocals or singing live. Cher's bold fashion, commanding stage presence, and undeniable legacy made her return a must-watch television moment.

Iconic Career and 'SNL' Return After Four Decades

Over the course of her more than 60-year of her career, Cher has established herself as one of the most lasting and significant artists in the history of music and entertainment. Alongside Sonny Bono, she rose to popularity in the 1960s and went on to become a chart-topping solo performer with classics including 'Believe' and 'If I Could Turn Back Time.'

She also received recognition as an actor, winning an Academy Award for Moonstruck among many other honours. Her unique voice and style are instantly recognizable all across the world, and her brave reinventions in pop, rock, and dance music have kept her relevant throughout generations. Surprisingly, on 20th December, this renowned artist made her musical comeback to Saturday Night Live for the first time in almost 40 years.

It delighted longtime fans and brought her lively spirit back to Studio 8H. Although Cher has made sporadic cameos, like as on the 1992 program and during SNL's 50th anniversary special, her last full musical guest appearance was in 1987. As a result, her 2025 visit is both nostalgic and eagerly awaited.

Performance Highlights and Fans' Lip Sync Speculation

Cher sang two songs from her holiday repertoire on the Ariana Grande-hosted performance, which also included an emotional farewell to cast member Bowen Yang: 'DJ Play a Christmas Song' and Chuck Berry's iconic 'Run Run Rudolph.' She commanded the stage with synchronized dancers and festive flair during the opening number while sporting a striking blond wig, a leather jacket, and dazzling leggings. But almost immediately as the song started, fans debated on social media whether Cher was lip-synching with recorded vocals or singing live.

Many pointed out moments where her lips did not seem to match the vocals perfectly, and at times the microphone appeared far from her mouth while the sound continued unabated—typical signs, to some, of lip‑syncing. Critics online were quick to compare the situation to Ashlee Simpson's infamous 2004 SNL lip‑sync mishap, though the context for Cher's performance seemed very different and generated a vastly different reaction.

Reactions were not consistently critical, despite speculation. The music star was backed by several admirers on X (previously Twitter) and other platforms, claiming that, at 79, she has earned the right to use backing tracks if she so chooses, particularly on television when vocal and technical requirements can be difficult.

Some claimed that SNL occasionally employs backing tracks for musical guests and that instead of focusing on the technical details, viewers should enjoy the experience of witnessing a live icon play. Comments ranged from humorous acceptance—"She's Cher, she gets a pass for anything!"—to supportive recognition of her decades of artistry, to others simply relishing the spectacle rather than the specifics of live vocals.

Legacy, Love, and Looking Ahead

In addition to showcasing her enduring star power, Cher's comeback on Saturday Night Live solidified her reputation as a cultural icon who can start discussions about anything from performance style to media expectations to her continued influence in pop culture. Even though the lip-sync controversy attracted a lot of attention, many fans were happy to see her on TV once more, honouring her legacy of memorable events as well as her festive music.

At 79, Cher continues to redefine what it means to be an active, vibrant artist in the public eye, reminding fans that her presence alone can be a highlight of the entertainment calendar. Whether fans loved every second of her performance or teased the lip‑syncing chatter, the general sentiment seemed clear: Cher remains an irreplaceable force in music and television, and her 'SNL' comeback added yet another memorable chapter to a legendary career.
