Lily Gladstone Discusses ‘Art in Competition’ With Emma Stone

Lily Gladstone finds the notion of pitting art against each other “ridiculous” despite losing the Best Actress Academy Award nomination to Emma Stone. Gladstone, known for her role in ‘The Killers of The Flower Moon,’ harbours no ill feelings toward Stone and has had “wonderful conversations” regarding the matter.

Amidst widespread speculation that she would win at the 96th Academy Awards, Gladstone’s hometown eagerly anticipated the outcome. However, despite not securing the Oscar, the actress remains unfazed by the result.

In an interview with Variety, Gladstone expressed her belief that awards should serve as accolades, emphasizing that simply being nominated should be considered a significant achievement. She questions the fairness of competition in the subjective and personal realm of art, particularly within the film industry.

Although pundits suggested Gladstone was a strong contender for the Best Supporting Actress category due to her impactful performance despite limited screen time, she deliberately refrained from campaigning in that category. Her focus was not on enhancing her odds or advancing her career; rather, she saw her character, Mollie Burkhart, as the heart of the Osage community portrayed in the film.

Gladstone emphasizes the importance of recognizing the lead role her character played in the narrative, highlighting the power of representation and the significance of her character’s story. While she acknowledges the strength inherent in supporting roles, she believes it is equally powerful to embrace and accept leading roles, particularly for women of colour in the industry.
