Lisa Kudrow Says She’s Rewatching ‘Friends’ to Cherish Matthew Perry’s Memory

The sitcom ‘Friends’ is a pop culture phenomenon that’s deeply cherished by millions of fans worldwide. Lisa Kudrow, who played the quirky and lovable Phoebe Buffay, has typically avoided watching herself on screen. However, she’s made an exception in honour of her late co-star, Matthew Perry.

Unlike the show’s massive global audience, Kudrow intentionally never caught up with ‘Friends’ because she feared she might not enjoy her work. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote her upcoming Apple TV+ show ‘Time Bandits,’ Kudrow shared that she’s started revisiting the iconic sitcom for Perry, who played the unforgettable Chandler Bing.

“Honestly, I wasn’t able to watch it because it’s too embarrassing to watch yourself. But if I make it about Matthew, then that’s OK,” she told THR. “And it’s just celebrating how hilarious he was — and that is what I want to remember [about him].”

Matthew Perry sadly passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. His death sent shockwaves across the globe, and biopsy reports later attributed his passing to the acute effects of the anaesthetic ketamine. A criminal investigation into his death is ongoing. Despite the sadness, Kudrow finds joy in rewatching ‘Friends,’ always laughing at the brilliant performances of her co-stars Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and of course, Perry, whom she praised for his unparalleled comedic timing. “No one ever knew that cadence or comedic rhythm before him,” she added.

Kudrow even admits to occasionally laughing at her own performances, despite finding it “embarrassing” to watch herself. She does this as a way to celebrate the legacy of Perry, who authored ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.’ It’s her “own little way” of honouring him.

One of the funniest scenes featuring Kudrow and Perry is from the episode ‘The One Where Everybody Finds Out,’ where Phoebe tries to seduce Chandler into revealing the truth about his relationship with Monica. Kudrow revealed that Joey opening Phoebe’s shirt was actually Matt LeBlanc’s idea. “We’ve got to come up with something to up the stakes,” LeBlanc suggested, and they went with it. It worked perfectly!
