For Macaulay Culkin, retirement is less of a final decision and more of an ongoing mindset.
The former child star, best known for 'Home Alone,' recently talked about his approach to acting while appearing on the 'SmartLess' podcast. Now 45, Culkin explained that he considers himself technically retired most of the time. He only steps back into acting when a project truly interests him, and once it's finished, he returns to retirement again. In his view, every role could be his last.
Macaulay Culkin's Life Beyond Hollywood
After starring in 'Richie Rich' in 1994 at age 14, Culkin actually walked away from Hollywood for nearly a decade. During that break, he focused on living a normal life, going to high school, experiencing first love, and enjoying typical teenage milestones away from the spotlight.

Unlike many child actors, Macaulay Culkin said he earned most of the money from his early success, which gave him financial freedom at a young age. As a result, he never felt pressured to keep working and could afford to step back and live life on his own terms.
He also shared that part of his decision to take a long break came from wanting to spend time with kids his own age. As a child actor, he was almost always surrounded by adults on set, which left him longing for a more traditional school experience and friendships with peers.
At the time, Culkin believed he was completely done with the film industry. He felt he had already accomplished everything he needed to, from building a name and career to securing his future. These days, he only takes on acting jobs for personal enjoyment, creative fulfilment, or the opportunity they bring, not out of necessity.

Macaulay Culkin added that he never seriously considered switching to a different career. Instead, he spent time figuring out what he wanted from life, eventually realising that acting would remain part of his journey, but only in a way that suited him.
In recent years, he has quietly returned to the spotlight. Earlier this year, he lent his voice to the animated sequel 'Zootopia 2' and currently appears in a mysterious role in season two of 'Fallout' on Prime Video.
