Madonna is Getting Sued For Her Concert in New York, Here’s Why

Madonna is now in the legal limelight as two disgruntled fans, Michael Fellows and Jonathan Hadden, are taking legal action against her for a recent concert in New York. The duo claims that the scheduled 20:30 EST start time for three consecutive nights turned into a saga of delays, pushing the performances past 22:30 and concluding as late as 01:00.

These fans argue that had they known about the significant delays, they wouldn’t have purchased tickets.

The legal battle unfolds with allegations of false advertising, as Fellows and Hadden point fingers at concert promoter Live Nation and the venue, Barclays Center. Their lawsuit contends that the delays amount to “false advertising, negligent misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive trade practices.” The legal documents underscore the inconvenience faced by attendees, especially those with work and family commitments, who endured late-night performances on weeknights.

The court papers delve into Madonna’s historical pattern of tardiness, referencing instances from her 2016 ‘Rebel Heart’ Tour, the 2019-2020 Madame X Tour, and prior tours where she consistently started shows over two hours late. According to the plaintiffs, this recurring behaviour was not communicated in advance, leaving ticket holders waiting without any notice of the delays.

Fellows and Hadden are seeking unspecified damages for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by the delayed performances. Madonna has yet to respond to the legal action and the BBC has reached out to her, Live Nation, and Barclays Center for comment.

This isn’t Madonna’s first brush with criticism for late starts. In 2019, a similar lawsuit was filed, but it was voluntarily dismissed a month later. Madonna, in that instance, asserted to fans that a queen is never late.

The ‘Celebration’ tour, featuring over 40 hits from her four-decade career, faced challenges even before the recent lawsuit. The tour, marking the 40th anniversary of her breakout single ‘Holiday,’ experienced a delayed start last year due to the singer’s health scare.

Madonna was found unconscious in her New York apartment in June and received treatment for a serious bacterial infection. Despite setbacks, the tour continued, drawing fans from the US, Canada and Europe.
