Mercy, born in Malawi on 22nd January 2006, became a part of Madonna’s family after the singer’s divorce from Ritchie in 2008. Madonna, as a single mother, applied to adopt Mercy in May 2009 and received approval the following month. In 2017, Madonna shared her adoption journey and family life in an interview with PEOPLE, expressing her desire to provide a home for children in need.

Reflecting on her decision to adopt, Madonna revealed, “Sometimes I would just close my eyes and think, ‘Why isn’t my kitchen filled with dancing children?’ Some so many children need a home. I thought, ‘What am I waiting for? Just do it.'”
