Margot Robbie Can’t Imagine A ‘Barbie’ Sequel

This summer, Margot Robbie and her ‘Barbie’ smashed it at the box office, raking in 1.4 billion dollars with Robbie taking on the lead role and donning the producer hat in this Greta Gerwig-helmed venture. The flick takes us on a ride through the fantastical ‘Barbieland’ to the real world, as things take a downturn in Barbie’s once-perfect life.

In a recent chat, Margot Robbie was probed about the potential of a sequel to what seemed like a standalone tale. “We went all in on this one. We didn’t cook it up to be a trilogy or anything,” Robbie shared. “Greta poured everything into this movie, so I’m struggling to picture what comes next.”

She pointed out that “original films can still make it big,” amidst the deluge of sequels and franchises dominating the big screen these days. “It doesn’t have to be a sequel, prequel, or a redo,” Robbie added. “It can be entirely original and still pack a punch with the right budget. Just because there’s a leading lady doesn’t mean it won’t resonate with everyone, which is a misconception still floating around.”

Robbie expressed her hope that the success of ‘Barbie’ would open doors for other filmmakers to pitch “big original ideas and get the green light to bring them to life properly.”

The movie’s triumph can be credited to its stellar promotional efforts and an A-list cast featuring stars like Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, and a bunch more, including heavyweights like Ryan Gosling, Helen Mirren, and John Cena. “We poured our all into this one; no trilogy plans,” she reiterated. “Greta went all out on this film, so imagining what’s next is a bit mind-boggling.”

Gerwig, asked about the prospect of a ‘Barbie’ sequel, echoed Robbie’s sentiments in an interview. “Right now, this is it. It feels like this after every film, like I’ve exhausted every idea and done everything I ever wanted to do,” she reflected. “I wouldn’t want to dampen anyone else’s dreams, but for me, I’m at ground zero.”
