Matt Damon Reflects on Robin Williams and the Possibility of a Bronze Statue in Boston
Matt Damon recently took a moment to reflect on his late co-star, Robin Williams, during an interview about his new film, ‘The Instigators.’ Damon and Williams famously shared the screen in the 1997 drama ‘Good Will Hunting,’ a film that not only won them critical acclaim but also a deep, enduring connection.
In the conversation with journalist Jake Hamilton, Damon spoke fondly of his experience working with Williams. He reminisced about the powerful scenes they filmed together, particularly the iconic bench scene in Boston’s Public Garden.

Damon described the moment as one where his character, Will Hunting, has a deep and meaningful conversation with Williams’ character, Dr. Sean Maguire. He recalled how Williams was so well-prepared that he had memorised his lines well before production began, a feat that left Damon and co-writer Ben Affleck in awe.
Beyond the memories, Damon shared an intriguing idea that had been pitched to him recently—placing a bronze statue of Robin Williams in Boston’s Public Garden. The statue, as Damon described, would be a tribute to Williams and his unforgettable role in ‘Good Will Hunting.’ The idea is that the statue would be positioned near the very bench where that emotional scene was filmed, allowing people to sit next to Williams, symbolically sharing a moment of connection.
Damon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, calling it “the coolest idea” and “the most beautiful installation.” He mentioned that he had heard about the concept about a month ago and hoped that it would come to fruition, noting that it would be a fitting tribute to a man who brought so much joy and inspiration to others.
