Matthew McConaughey’s Triumphant Film Comeback Earns Standing Ovation at SXSW

At SXSW, where his most recent picture, ‘The Rivals of Amziah King’, debuted on 10th March, Matthew McConaughey’s much-awaited big-screen comeback was met with an overwhelmingly positive reception.

The drama, which is set in rural Oklahoma, centres on McConaughey’s character, Amziah King, a bluegrass singer and owner of a honey company whose life is turned upside down when his foster daughter, played by Angelina LookingGlass, unexpectedly arrives.  Dangerous enemies who want to steal everything from King threaten him as they attempt to mend their relationship.

Variety reports that the picture, which also stars Kurt Russell, received a standing ovation at its SXSW premiere at The Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, but no official release date has been set.  McConaughey hasn’t acted in a live-action movie since 2019.

The Oscar-winning actor talked about his break from acting before the screening, saying he was shocked to learn that it had been six years since his last on-screen role.  He clarified that he was concentrating on writing his book, Greenlights, and other projects during his break.

McConaughey also expressed his astonishment at the unexpected musical components in the movie, stating that he was unaware of how much music would be used until he watched the finished cut.

Despite taking a break from performing for a number of years, McConaughey has continued to be well-known.  Along with writing his book, he costarred with Charli XCX and Greta Gerwig in an Uber Eats Super Bowl commercial.  He has also made references to a possible political future, having previously thought about running for governor of Texas in 2021.
