Michelle Yeoh is still trying to process what happened at this year's Oscars. The actress, who played Madame Morrible in 'Wicked: For Good,' admitted she was stunned when the film failed to land a single nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards.
Yeoh shared that she was not just surprised but genuinely shocked. She suggested that sometimes voters may feel a film has already received plenty of recognition the first time around and choose to spread the spotlight elsewhere. Still, she believes the sequel deserved much more love, calling it a beautifully crafted movie.
The first 'Wicked' film had a major awards run, earning 10 nominations and taking home trophies for production design and costume design. It also scored acting nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, along with nominations in top categories like Best Picture.

Michelle Yeoh's Views on 'Wicked: For Good' Oscars Snub
Michelle Yeoh feels strongly that 'Wicked: For Good' should have earned recognition in several areas, especially costume design, hair and makeup, cinematography, and production design. She pointed out that the sequel is even more elaborate than the first film, with expanded world-building and new destinations that make it stand apart rather than feel like a repeat. That is why the shutout hit her hard.
She also opened up about her early hesitation to join the 'Wicked' films. Reuniting with director Jon M. Chu—whom she previously worked with on 'Crazy Rich Asians'—sounded exciting, but there was one small problem: singing. Yeoh joked that she does not consider herself a singer and was nervous about taking on a role that required it. Chu reassured her it would be manageable, and in the end, she embraced the challenge, worked with a voice coach, and picked up new skills along the way.

In typical Michelle Yeoh fashion, she even laughed about her naturally husky voice, saying it is so deep in the mornings that people sometimes mistake her for a man on the phone.
After making three films together, Yeoh clearly feels a strong bond with Chu. She described him as someone she is deeply proud of, praising his growth as a filmmaker and saying that working with him on both 'Wicked' films was an absolute joy.
