Miley Cyrus' show-stopping performance of ‘Flowers’ at the 2024 Grammy Awards might not have happened without a bit of encouragement from Dolly Parton. During a recent episode of ‘My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman,' the pop star shared insights into her close relationship with the country icon and recounted a "tough conversation" they had.
Cyrus explained that her connection with Parton dates back to her childhood, as her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, collaborated with the "Jolene" singer in the '90s. "I don’t remember our first meeting; I was so young. My dad and she worked together, and I think my dad even toured with her," she told Letterman. Parton is Cyrus' godmother, a role she also portrayed in 'Hannah Montana,' blending fiction and reality for the 'Party in the U.S.A.' singer.

Cyrus shared that, at the time, she didn't fully grasp the difference between herself and her TV persona, Hannah Montana. "Parts of me are that character, including a little bit of my relationship with Dolly," she said.
She highlighted how Hannah Montana's dual life, famous for wearing a blonde wig and balancing a superstar persona with a regular girl, mirrors Parton's career. "I realise that’s something that Dolly has been doing pretty much her entire life," Cyrus noted.

Reflecting on their conversation, Cyrus recalled telling Parton, "I’m wondering if I’m going to do the Grammys or not." Parton responded, "Well, of course, you’re going to do the Grammys, and you’re not just going to show up but you’re going to show off. And you’re going to be everything that you are sitting right here in front of me." This encouragement led to Cyrus' memorable performance and her first two Grammy wins.
Cyrus also shared Parton's advice about the importance of appearance and confidence. "She said, 'And don’t forget about the beauty. The hair, the makeup, the whole show. It’s armour for us,'" Cyrus recounted. Parton always emphasised authenticity, telling her, "You do you, and I’ll do me, and together we’ll be us." This advice wasn't about becoming Dolly but about embracing her true self while shining on stage.
