Nelly Furtado’s upcoming album ‘7’ has been notably influenced by her daughter Nevis, who played a significant role in shaping the project's direction. During a recent discussion about the album with NME, Furtado shared a humorous anecdote about how Nevis, who is 20 years old, advised her on the use of auto-tune in the music.
“She’d literally be like, ‘Mom, why are you using auto-tune on this song?’ You think it sounds cool but it doesn’t,” Furtado recounted with a laugh. Nevis' candid feedback led Furtado to reconsider the direction of her album, demonstrating the impact of her daughter’s input on the creative process.

Furtado also noted that Nevis reminded her of the importance of maintaining the authentic, three-dimensional quality of her music. This insight prompted Furtado to delve deeper into her artistic vision for ‘7’, which marks her return to music after a seven-year hiatus. The break was largely due to her responsibilities as a parent, as Furtado welcomed a son and another daughter since the release of her previous album, ‘The Ride’.
Reflecting on her time away from the studio, Furtado mentioned, “I hadn’t set foot in a studio in about three years, but something told me I needed to get back in.” She described her desire to create an album that captures the energy and atmosphere of a soundcheck, where her voice resonates loudly from the speakers.

In a heartfelt Instagram post announcing the album, Furtado introduced her latest single, ‘Corazón’, and shared her deep emotional connection to the music. She expressed, “This is going to sound strange and stupid but this isn’t a job for me. It’s super personal. Music is my whole language and life and love and blessing, so sometimes it’s hard for me to wrap that up in a bow 🎀.”
Furtado also reflected on the journey of creating ‘7’, revealing that the idea for ‘Corazón’ came to her during a trip to Colombia. She emphasized the importance of the creative process, stating, “It’s really always about the journey, honestly.” She concluded her post by sharing how the number 7 appeared in her life as a sign of encouragement whenever she doubted herself, highlighting the personal significance of this new chapter in her career.
