Netflix is facing a wave of discontent as it implements changes to its subscription plans, particularly in the UK and Canada. The primary source of frustration stems from the replacement of the ad-free basic plan with an ad-supported option, prompting backlash from subscribers who view this move as a downgrade to their viewing experience. 

Many users are expressing their displeasure and considering cancelling their subscriptions in protest. The controversy escalated when Netflix announced via a mass email to its customers that it would discontinue the ad-free basic subscription later this year.

Subscribers currently on the basic plan will be automatically transitioned to a lower-tier subscription that includes ads during TV shows and movies. This shift has sparked criticism as it goes against the previous promise of an ad-free experience for basic subscribers.

Netflix's decision to introduce ads to its basic plan comes alongside a pricing restructuring introduced in July 2023. Under the new system, subscribers can opt for a lower-priced service, paying only £4.99 per month, but with the trade-off of having advertisements integrated into their viewing sessions.

While some users may appreciate the cost savings, many are disappointed by the introduction of ads, especially after being accustomed to an ad-free environment. In an attempt to mitigate the negative impact of these changes, Netflix has announced an upgrade to the video quality of basic plans, offering 720p resolution at no additional cost. 

This enhancement aims to provide a smoother and more enjoyable viewing experience, albeit with the caveat of accompanying advertisements. The decision has sparked debates among subscribers, with some welcoming the improved video quality and others expressing frustration over the intrusion of ads into their streaming sessions.
