Nicola Coughlan Opens Up About Pressure From Fans Regarding ‘Bridgerton’ Carriage Scene

Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton faced significant pressure during the pivotal carriage scene in ‘Bridgerton’.

In a clip shared by Netflix, the duo discusses the scene where Colin Bridgerton (played by Newton) declares his love for Penelope Featherington (portrayed by Coughlan), leading to a passionate encounter in the back of a carriage.

Newton, 31, expresses his appreciation for the moment, noting Colin’s vulnerability, to which Coughlan, 37, adds that her character initially feels she’s ruined everything.

They acknowledge the anticipation surrounding the scene, with Coughlan revealing they felt immense pressure to make it both romantic and sexy, considering the expectations from the enthusiastic fan base. Director Andrew Ahn credited Newton for a subtle detail in the scene, where Colin adjusts Penelope’s sleeve with only two fingers, adding to the authenticity of the moment.

Reflecting on the scene’s significance, Ahn mentioned the underlying desire among fans for Colin and Penelope’s relationship to progress, acknowledging the challenge of portraying such intimate scenes with friends.

Coughlan previously joked about the filming experience, mentioning a humorous mishap involving a broken piece of furniture during a s*x scene with Newton. Despite the challenges, their familiarity with each other made the process enjoyable.

The first part of ‘Bridgerton’ season 3 is currently available on Netflix, with part 2 set to release on 13th June.
