‘Nimona’, the Netflix and Annapurna Animation collaboration, stands as an Oscar-nominated masterpiece, weaving a captivating narrative of passion, resilience, and the quest for belonging both within the story's universe and beyond the confines of the screen.
At the heart of the tale lies the courageous knight Ballister Boldheart, portrayed by Riz Ahmed, who finds himself unjustly accused of regicide. In his quest to clear his tarnished name and restore peace to the kingdom, he forms an unlikely alliance with the enigmatic and shape-shifting teenager Nimona, brought to life by Chloë Grace Moretz.

The journey embarked upon by Nimona and Ballister closely mirrors the arduous path traversed by the film's producers, who triumphed over seemingly insurmountable hurdles to bring their vision to fruition, culminating in a prestigious Oscar nomination. Among those intimately familiar with the project's tumultuous evolution are producers Karen Ryan and Julie Zackary, whose dedication spans nearly a decade. Originating at Blue Sky Studios, the project encountered its first obstacle with Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
Reflecting on this challenging period, Ryan recalls the studio's unwavering commitment to preserving the essence of the film amidst the industry upheaval. Their resolve was tested further by resistance from Disney regarding the inclusion of queer representation, exemplified by a pivotal kiss between Boldheart and his boyfriend, Ambrosius Goldenloin, portrayed by Eugene Lee Yang.

The tribulations did not end there. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic compounded the difficulties, exacerbating financial strains within Disney and ultimately resulting in the closure of Blue Sky Studios. The abruptness of this development left the ‘Nimona’ team in a state of uncertainty, with their collective efforts seemingly on the brink of oblivion.
However, amidst the chaos and uncertainty, Ryan and Zackary remained steadfast in their commitment to amplifying messages of acceptance and inclusivity through their storytelling.
