Paramount Pictures has officially acquired the screen rights to Rebecca Ross’s bestselling fantasy romance novel ‘Divine Rivals’, following a hotly contested bidding war among multiple studios. The book is the first installment in Ross’s ‘Letters of Enchantment’ series, which has become a viral sensation, particularly on BookTok.

Sofia Alvarez, known for adapting ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ for Netflix, has been tapped to write the screenplay. The adaptation will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, under his first-look deal with the studio, alongside Pouya Shahbazian—who previously worked on the ‘Divergent’ films and is a seasoned figure in the book-to-screen adaptation space.

‘Divine Rivals’ is set against the backdrop of a war between ancient gods and centres on two rival young journalists who unknowingly fall in love through anonymous letters exchanged via a magical typewriter. The story draws on elements reminiscent of ‘You’ve Got Mail’, World War One-era themes, and classic fantasy tropes.

The ‘Letters of Enchantment’ series has proven a massive success, spending over 125 weeks on The New York Times bestsellers list and earning a Goodreads Choice Award. According to the publisher, over one million copies have been sold, and the books have been translated into 27 languages. Ross is set to release a prequel titled ‘Wild Reverence’ on 2nd September and will also serve as an executive producer on the film.

Alvarez’s Adaptation Experience and Representation Details

Alvarez brings considerable experience in adaptations, having written two of the ‘To All the Boys’ films and co-written and directed ‘Along for the Ride’ for Netflix. She is also an accomplished playwright, with credits including a stage musical based on William Steig’s ‘Amos & Boris’.

Ross is represented by Suzie Townsend and New Leaf Literary & Media, who also handled the sale of film and TV rights. Alvarez is represented by UTA and Jackoway Austen.
