Pedro Pascal Shares Nickname for ‘Gladiator II’ Co-Star Paul Mescal After His Impressive Physical Transformation
Pedro Pascal was deeply impressed by the physical transformation of his ‘Gladiator II’ co-star Paul Mescal for the film. In an interview with Vanity Fair, discussing the Ridley Scott-directed sequel, Pascal described the intense battle scenes between his character, Marcus Acacius, and Mescal’s Lucius Verus as “brutal” to shoot.
“I nicknamed him ‘Brick Wall Paul,'” Pascal, 49, remarked about Mescal, 28. “He became incredibly strong. I’d rather be thrown from a building than have to face him again.” ‘The Last of Us’ actor added, “Going up against someone so fit, talented, and much younger… Besides Ridley being a genius, Paul is a major reason why I endured that physical challenge.”

Previously, Mescal admitted feeling nervous about meeting Pascal, recalling in a 2023 Esquire interview that he was hesitant to approach the Mandalorian actor when they first met at LAX airport. Fortunately, Pascal approached Mescal warmly, leaving a positive impression on the young actor. “He came up and seemed so genuine,” Mescal shared, expressing his anticipation to work alongside Pascal.
In ‘Gladiator II’, Mescal takes on the pivotal role of Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) from the original Gladiator (2000), and nephew of villain Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Lucius idolizes Maximus (Russell Crowe) as he navigates Rome’s gladiatorial arenas.
According to Vanity Fair, Pascal’s character, Acacius, is “a Roman general who trained under Maximus as a junior officer.” In addition to Mescal and Pascal, the sequel features Denzel Washington, Fred Hechinger, Joseph Quinn, and returning actors Nielsen and Derek Jacobi from the original ‘Gladiator’.
Discussing his preparation for the role, Mescal emphasized his focus on fight choreography and achieving physical strength appropriate for his character. He emphasized the importance of feeling strong and capable, not just looking the part of a warrior.
“Muscles can develop, but feeling strong in your body affects you psychologically and enhances your performance,” Mescal noted. “It’s crucial for the film.”
‘Gladiator II’ is scheduled for release in theatres on 22nd November.
