Perrie Edwards on Why She Decided to Go Solo: “Little Mix Had Me Tired”

Perrie Edwards has shared more about her solo career following Little Mix’s hiatus, shedding light on her motivations and experiences. On a recent episode of the ‘Dish’ podcast, Edwards spoke candidly with hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett about her transition from being a part of one of the world’s biggest girl bands to forging her path.

Edwards described her decision to go solo as a gradual process rather than an overnight change. “I think it was like a gradual thing,” she said. “I don’t think it was like an overnight, ‘I’m gonna go solo now,’ because I never knew what I would do in my future.” She acknowledged that the demands of Little Mix had taken their toll. “I just knew that Little Mix had me tired. Yes, I think it kind of– well we lost a member. And then we were like, ‘Well, what do we do now, like, do we keep going? Do we not?’ And then we continued, we did another tour. And then it was kind of like the farewell.”

Despite the challenges, Edwards emphasised the strong bond between the group members. “And the thing is, like, we love each other and we’re so supportive of each other and we just want to see each other win. So it wasn’t like, do you know what? You’re driving me nuts. I need a break. It was almost like we’ve done this for so long now, we were babies like I was seventeen when I was put in the band.”

Reflecting on her time with Little Mix, Edwards admitted that the group had been such a significant part of her life that she barely remembered life before it. “It’s like, that’s all we ever knew in my life was Little Mix. That’s basically all I remember, like, I don’t really remember much of my life before them. And I think we just gradually came to like the decision that we were like, ‘Yeah, let’s try something new. Let’s do acting, let’s do singing, let’s do all these different things like fashion, whatever, that we wouldn’t have ever had time to do if we were still in the band.’”

Little Mix first found fame in 2011 after winning The X Factor, and in 2021, they announced they’d be taking “a little break” to focus on solo projects. This announcement followed Jesy Nelson’s departure from the group, who left to pursue her solo career, releasing ‘Boyz’ featuring Nicki Minaj.

The remaining members – Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – have also embarked on their solo endeavours. Pinnock took on an acting role in the Christmas movie ‘Boxing Day’ and signed with Warner Records, while Thirlwall signed a global deal with RCA Records and has written songs for artists like TWICE, Iggy Azalea and Britney Spears.
