Rachel McAdams Reveals Why She Turned Down ‘Mean Girls’ Reunion

‘Mean Girls’ icon Rachel McAdams recently spilled the tea on why she skipped out on the chance to join the recent cast reunion. The ‘Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret’ star revealed that the idea of featuring in a Walmart commercial just didn’t tickle her fancy.

While Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, and Amanda Seyfried happily slipped back into their 2004 characters for the ad, McAdams’ Regina George was conspicuously absent. McAdams said, “I guess I wasn’t that thrilled about doing a commercial if I’m being totally honest. A movie, sure, that sounded awesome. But commercials? Just not my vibe. Plus, I had no clue everyone was on board. I’m always up for a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion and hanging with my Plastics, but I only found out later.”

The ad showcased Lohan’s Cady Heron in her new gig as a guidance counsellor at North Shore High School, with Seyfried’s Karen Smith still rocking the reporter role and Chabert’s Gretchen Wieners persistently trying (and failing) to make ‘fetch’ happen.

McAdams, however, kept the door open for Tina Fey’s ‘Mean Girls’ stage musical movie adaptation. “Tina and I tossed around a few ideas, but making it all work was a bit tricky in the end,” she revealed. “I was game for whatever Tina wanted. The direction it took sounds fantastic, and I’m eagerly anticipating it.”

The upcoming film, a fusion of the 2004 classic and the 2018 Broadway hit, both penned by Fey, stars Reneé Rapp reprising her role as Regina. She joins forces with Angourie Rice as Cady Heron and Auli’i Cravalho as Janis Ian. The star-studded cast also features Jaquel Spivey, Bebe Wood, Avantika Vandanapu, Jenna Fischer, Jon Hamm, Busy Philipps, and Tim Meadows, who returns as Principal Duvall.

For those eagerly waiting, the full-length trailer dropped in November, offering a glimpse into the high school drama redux. ‘Mean Girls’ will hit theatres on 12th January 2024.
