Pop icon and business mogul Rihanna recently peeled back the curtain on a very personal side of her life: the journey to accepting her natural hair. Rihanna talked candidly on the "Couch by Lena Situations" podcast on how she felt cut off from her natural texture as a child because of an environment where straightened hair was celebrated. She admitted that for years she struggled with wanting "what I don't have," a mindset that warped her relationship with her hair and ultimately sparked the creation of her Fenty Hair line.

In addition to her hair, Rihanna talked about her self-doubt while releasing songs or beauty products, showing that even international fame doesn't protect her from her creative vulnerability. When you combine all of this with her changing identity as a mother of several kids with boyfriend A$AP Rocky, you find a celebrity who is actively battling with authenticity, growth, and image rather than merely riding through life.

The Hair Journey: From Experimentation to Acceptance

For the episode, the star wore a strapless gold dress that was gathered around the middle to help conceal her baby bump. Rihanna's conversation about her hair was deeply rooted in her own experiences of change. Before reaching a point where her natural texture seemed worthy of celebration, she talked about how she switched between weaves, braids, colours, and textures all the time. She has gone from a phase of keeping long, straight hair to blonde pixie cuts.

On the podcast she said, "We've always been taught to love what you don't have…That was a struggle for me. Falling in love with my hair again was the biggest inspiration for me to create this brand. I wanted products that not just worked, but more importantly, I wanted them to repair your hair and replenish your hair every step of the way."

She also revealed that postpartum hair loss following the births of her children brought fresh anxiety: "I did not expect it to happen in waves … At that point, you're just like alright, enough is enough." Her creation of Fenty Hair, which she claims was designed not only to style hair but also to restore it and make every texture feel visible, was influenced by these times of frustration and reflection.

Self‑Doubt, Motherhood and Creative Evolution

Rihanna talked on the doubts she still has about her profession in addition to her hair. Whether launching a new beauty product or preparing new music, she admitted, "When I make my albums, I get to a point where I think, 'Wow, I've lived with it for so long, I know it works, but now I'm about to give it to the world. Is it right? Is it right yet?" She further added, "I experience that with all of my product development. If you’re creative, you're gonna have doubt."

As a mother—having welcomed her third child in 2025 and balancing multiple business venture—these doubts don't disappear; they evolve. She explained how her perspective on identity and achievement has changed as a result of the responsibilities of parenthood, entrepreneurship, and the arts merging into one. With her natural hair journey and her creative mindset now intertwined, Rihanna appears to be stepping into a new era—one which is grounded in authenticity rather than perfection.
