Riley Keough Opens Up: TV Presents a Greater Challenge Than Film

Riley Keough has a preference for working on film sets over TV sets!

Fresh from earning her first-ever Emmy nomination for her lead role in ‘Daisy Jones & the Six,’ the 34-year-old actress attended the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, to promote her movie ‘Sasquatch Sunset.’ During a panel at The Indigenous House, presented by IllumiNative, a social justice organization she actively supports, Keough shared insights into her medium preference.

Riley Keough talked about how fast TV shows are made and how it’s been tough for her. She pointed out that there’s not much time to get ready compared to movies, where there’s usually time for practice. Keough stressed that TV work is quick, and things often change a lot.

During a discussion with her friend and War Pony collaborator Gina Gammell, host Tazbah Chavez, and fellow panellists Jana Schmieding and Alexandra Lazarowich, Riley Keough, known for her role in ‘Zola’, highlighted the importance of creative freedom in her work, whether it’s in film or TV.

When delving into her approach to filmmaking, Keough stressed the value of thorough preparation, emphasizing the freedom to be present at the moment during the actual shooting. This philosophy extends to her acting, where she prefers spontaneity over a strict and rehearsed method.

Keough expressed her aversion to hitting specific marks while acknowledging its necessity, particularly in TV. However, she emphasized her preference for thriving when granted creative freedom. Keough actively strives to foster such an environment, especially in projects where she takes the lead, such as her directorial debut, War Pony.

She concluded by stating that whenever she’s allowed the freedom to feel like she’s approaching the work as if it’s the first time every time, that’s the approach she embraces.

Daisy Jones marked Riley Keough’s inaugural lead role in a TV series, although she had ventured into television previously with appearances on shows like ‘The Terminal List’, ‘Riverdale’, and ‘The Girlfriend Experience’.

In a conversation at the series premiere, where she portrayed a musician in ‘Daisy Jones’, Keough, who is Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, shared her enthusiasm. She described the experience as amazing, especially due to her passion for music and the extensive year-and-a-half rehearsal period.

“When we finally got on stage, it was incredibly exciting. We were all just thrilled to put into action what we had been practising for so long, and it was a wonderful experience,” she added.
