‘Road House’: 80s Action Remake Scores Prime Video’s Biggest Movie Debut

As the most well-received movie debut on Amazon Prime Video to date, the remake of the legendary action film ‘Road House’ from 1989 has achieved a new milestone. According to Amazon, the movie has received an astounding 50 million views worldwide since its March 21st release.

In addition to Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, and Billy Magnussen, the remake stars Jake Gyllenhaal as bouncer Dalton, a role that was originally played by Patrick Swayze.

The head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, praised the film’s success and credited Gyllenhaal’s outstanding performance as well as the team’s hard work. She expressed her happiness at seeing the remake being well-received by both original and new viewers.

The movie’s path to popularity wasn’t without controversy, though. Because Amazon decided to release the movie exclusively on their streaming service, director Doug Liman decided to skip the film’s Texas premiere at SXSW.

Liman accused Amazon of favouring streaming over theatrical releases and berated the company’s lack of support for theatres in an open letter Liman, who was first signed by MGM before Amazon acquired the studio, expressed his disapproval of the streaming behemoth’s strategy and stressed the value of maintaining the theatre experience for movies such as ‘Road House.’

Despite these obstacles, ‘Road House’ has become a huge success on streaming services, a noteworthy accomplishment for Amazon Prime Video, and a topic of renewed conversation regarding the changing face of movie distribution.
