Robert Downey Jr. Says Margot Robbie Deserves More Recognition for ‘Barbie’

Robert Downey Jr. recently shared his perspective on Margot Robbie’s performance in the ‘Barbie’ movie, offering his insights during a SAG-AFTRA interview with Willem Dafoe and Sterling K. Brown. The discussion centred around actors who often don’t receive sufficient recognition for their craft, especially in expressing emotions and expressions on screen.

Reflecting on the simplicity that can make an actor highly effective, Downey Jr. expressed, “It never fails to impress and remind me how little you need to do to be effective. Just the simplest version of expression, that’s what the camera wants. The closer the camera gets, the more it wants it. Time and time again, it’s demonstrated that it’s super effective.”

However, he pointed out the crucial role played by Robbie in actively listening, highlighting the energy of her performance in conveying the depth of the scene.

In describing the challenges faced by actors, Downey Jr. gave insight into the dynamic of filmmaking, mentioning scenarios where an actor, having listened to lengthy passages, is suddenly thrust into action.

Expressing joy for the film’s various nominations, Robbie emphasized, “Everyone getting the nods that they’ve had is just incredible, and the best picture nod.” She highlighted the film’s impact on culture as the ultimate reward, describing the reactions from people as the most significant aspect of the entire experience.
